While Fidelio is the only completely piano work, Ontogeny is the only completely synthesizer work in the Life in Music collection.
Synthesizers, though newer as an instrument of sound than pianos, can nevertheless reach areas of psyche that seem more primal. Ontogeny is an attempt to represent a life from its conception until death using these primal sounds.

Beginning with “Nova/Conception,” the description of the moments past conception reflect those of the origins of the Universe. “Tether” and “Gestation” involve the floating within the womb. Entirely a third of the album deals with the time prior to birth as it is the most critical of times.
Stages of life and important points of mastery are described in the reveries of “Play & Order” and “Spirit” while pains and joys are described in “Loss” “Intimacy” and “Reflection and Integrity.”
